5 Things to Avoid If You Have Neck Pain

If you suffer from neck pain, you can try physical therapy in order to reduce painful sensations and improve the range of motion and mobility of the neck. Your physiotherapist can tell you what you need to do to quickly recover and return to your regular activities.

If you want to get rid of your neck pain as soon as possible, you should stop doing certain things that may lead to neck pain. This can be an important part of neck pain treatment.  If you experience severe neck pain, consult your doctor and visit a physical therapist to find out which treatment method will work best for you. In this article, we gathered five things to avoid if you have neck pain.

1. Lead a sedentary lifestyle

Being a couch potato is not the best way to spend your life. Exercise is the easiest way to keep your neck moving normally and prevent painful sensations. General exercises can minimize neck pain and special exercises for the neck and exercises for strengthening your posture will help you quickly eliminate neck pain and prevent it from returning.

2. Sleeping with a bunch of pillows

If you are fond of sleeping with many pillows, you need to stop doing it right now. Your neck consists of several bones that form a curve (lordosis). When you sleep with many pillows, you bend your head forward during sleep. This may result in the loss of cervical lordosis and increase the load on the discs, joints, and muscles of your neck. Try to sleep with a single pillow and use a cervical roll to support your neck when sleeping.

3. Slouching

Poor posture when standing or sitting is one of the most common causes of neck pain. If your neck hurts, you may ask your physical therapist to examine your posture. The doctor can give some advice that will help you constantly change your posture, teach you how to sit properly and how to keep your neck in the proper position. You can also try to perform some postural exercises that will help you improve your posture.

4. Excessive texting

These days, most people are attached to their smartphones or tablets and many of them often use their phones to send text messages during the day. When you are typing or reading a text and spend hours looking down at your phone, your neck is in the wrong position and is bent forward. This can lead to text neck, a condition that is caused by prolonged use of smartphones and tablets. Visit your physical therapist and learn how to properly hold your neck when you are texting. However, it would be better and easier to simply stop texting and contact your friends with a phone call.

5. Waiting for neck pain to pass by itself

If you noticed that your neck starts to hurt, you may decide to just wait until it goes away and do nothing to relieve it. In some cases, this method may work but there are some things you should do to ease your pain when it becomes unbearable.

See your doctor to receive an accurate diagnosis and start treatment. The fact is that most cases of neck pain require a little more than just postural correction and exercise. But you don’t have to worry about invasive procedures such as injections or surgeries. They can help, but such procedures are usually performed only in very severe cases. Visit your physical therapist to learn the most suitable exercises that will help you quickly return to a pain-free lifestyle. Your physical therapist will also teach you how to avoid painful sensations in the future so that you will be able to manage your neck pain.
